ABOUT YOU – Nikki Shaw – with great Youtube video

Congratulations to Nikki. This ABOUT YOU article means you can come in to spend $50 in the store.

Where are you from? Peregian Beach

How long have you been a member of the VIP Club? Just signed up but have been a customer of Simpsons Mitre 10 for a long time

What are your favourite 3 cooking tools and why?

My favourite cooking tools are:

The stick mixer because it purees veggies into lush hot soups

The slow cooker. You can put it on in the morning and the meal is all done. The kids are fed and happy.

My tea infuser. It looks nice and makes me stop and sit for a cuppa.

What is your signature dish – the one you love cooking – or get asked to cook?

Warm steak salad topped with pine nuts, pesto etc

Your favourite restaurant in Noosa or anywhere?

My favourite restaurant in Noosa is Pitchfork at Peregian Beach. The food is wonderful.

If stranded on a dessert island, what CD/Music would you take with you?

I would take Bruno Mars – I love The Lazy Song

What do you like about shopping at Noosa Junction?

I Love Noosa Junction. Everything is in one place.

Thanks Nikki. Very funky Bruno Mars song!

See you in the store.

Reserve Restaurant – Maleny

PROS
* you can book and check out the menu and prices on line
* lovely view from the back of the restaurant
* service was comfortable and friendly- Tegan is a gem
* wine list is the most comprehensive I have ever seen
* menu is very good, hard to choose
* food was wonderful, really wonderful
* prices are no more than you would expect

CONS
* the room was a little cold
* the cars whizzing past the front of the restaurant can be distracting
* only a few wines by the glass

I can highly recommend everything we had. The twice baked souffle, a ramekin with creamy morton bay bug in the bottom with a cheesy souffle on top. (When the souffle mixes with the creaminess underneath…..WOW!) The chicken pate, softer flavour than some with lovely macadamia toasts. The pan roasted barramundi, don’t waste the bisque, spoon it up somehow.

I rarley have dessert. Honestly I am not fussy enough. I would be just as happy getting a Drumstick on the way home, so $14 is wasted on me. That said, I had the creme brulee with a meringue centre and rhubarb underneath and it was wonderful, fabulous terrific.

Overall worth the drive.

See you in the store.

Great Week-end Day 1 Noosa

I had a really nice week end. One day in Noosa and one down in Brisbane.

Ate too much pastry, German and French. Visited some new and beautiful shops, one in Noosa one in Brisbane. Todays post is Noosa, tomorrow will be Brisbane.

What sort of week-end did you have?

1. Breakfast in Pomona. The lovely Saffron Namaste in Memorial Avenue. Sound unlikley, but they do a great omlette.

2. Stopped at Juicy Junk in Pomona and brought home an old silk oak wardrobe. It is a bit of a project but will be in the window of the shop in about 2 weeks

3. I wish I had never discovered these. The maple pecan danish at the German Bakehouse on Weyba Road. Forget you heard about these.

4. New on Gympie Terrace and very nice another Saffron …Saffron Noosa

5. Late lunch at Pitchfork at Peregian Beach. VERY nice indeed.

6. PHEW! Home on the couch to watch The Kings Speech on DVD. Great day!

See you in the store.

Kitchenware Shops in Sydney

So, I went to Sydney and I saw……..

The Sydney Gift Fair was just great. For a few reasons.

Don’t get me wrong it is a lot of hard work but the hotel I always stay at in North Sydney gave me a lovely room. The view was this…..

which at the end of a REALLY hard day is lovley to come home to. And thanks to daylight savings I could get home late but still watch the sunset and the lights come on around the harbour.(Add chardonnay to that scene and …well…how bad can that be)

Thanks to all of you who emailed to recommend kitchenware shops to visit.

Thanks to Heidi to said if I was going to The Essential Ingredient in Rozelle, I must walk up to Belle Fleur chocolate shop and get Salted Caramel dipped in Dark Chocolate. Here we are Heidi….my selection. I had the salted caramel, and bought a few other things so I could get one of their little blue boxes.

Ruth suggested Peters of Kensington, but I ran out of time. Thanks Tessa. Had forgotten The Bay Tree in Woollahara which I love. Here they seemed to predict a trend towards home preserving. Lots of preserving accessories.

A visit to The Bay Tree lead to Simon Johnson down the road. That beautiful ‘providor’. The kitchenware upstairs is really beautiful. I saw some wonderful teatowels in Simon Johnson which I am ordering for our shop.

And then down Queens Road and around the corner to The Donns Hay General Store. Just beautiful.

Donna Hay imports a beautiful range of milk glass cake stands. You have probably seen them in her magazine. Couldn’t work out how to get one back on the plane.

Last year she had a recipe for cookies in the shape of a beehive with a bee, but the cookie cutters were impossible to find. They had them in her store so I bought them.

I adore visitng kitchenware stores. I like seeing what items they have that may be good for my shop. How they display their stock. What sort of service they offer. Are the girls friendly and helpful or aloof.

In fact I am planning a trip to Los Angeles later in the year to truely indulge my passion.
Williams-Sonoma, SurLa Table, Pottery Barn oooooooohhhhh! I can hardly wait.

I’ll write about what was exciting at the Gift Fair next.

See you in the store.

Arriving Soon – Baking Cups – Bright Colours

When I was growing up they were called patty pans or patty cases, now they are cupcake baking cups. And, there are thousands to choose from.

I have just ordered these. After much research. The beauty of these is they keep this fabulous colour through the baking process. They come out of the oven just as colourful as they went in.

MANY will become translucent during the baking process.

These can also be used for ice cream or as lolly cups. Come in and see. Arriving in about two weeks.
